Photo Shots from Pete Lachapelle TALES !
The first Uriah Heep album I listened to was The Magicians Birthday. Yeah.... that goes way back to 1973, I was only 14 then, now I’m 40. My sister’s boyfriend had lent me his album, asked if I ever heard of Uriah Heep I said "no".... "then listen to this, you’ll love this group".
I remember my bedroom so well, a little record player hooked up to a home made speaker box with a 12 inch woofer in it, black lights, tin foil on the ceiling and posters of various groups... listening for the first time Uriah Heep. I replayed that album over and over that night, especially, "Tales" .....what a beautiful song.
I wasn’t new to rock, as a matter of fact I was already into E.L.P, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, King Crimson, Gentle Giant.... I could go on and on, and after listening to The Magicians Birthday I was definitely hooked to Uriah Heep. What a group, their style, the music arrangements, the vocals.... these songs are one of a kind...it’s music that could only be composed by Uriah Heep.
The Very "Eavy Very" Umble (Come Away Melinda) Look at Yourself (July Morning) Demon and Wizards (The Wizard) Sweet Freedom (Pilgrim) etc ...etc ...only Uriah Heep could have composed these, as well as all the other albums, there’s to many to mention.
In 1986 I went to see Uriah Heep in Ottawa, this is a while back also, however, I remember it was a full house and it was a fantastic show, a great new line up for Heep. Before they got off stage I got Mick Box and Lee Kerslake’s autographs, my wife Judy was right behind me also getting their autographs.
In 1990 Heep returned to Ottawa, I went to see them again, only this time to return home with pictures of Mick, Lee, Bernie and I and again more autographs. The first time Luc my brother saw these pictures he said to me "man, I’ve never seen you smile so proudly on any other pictures in my life". Well Bro, wouldn’t you ?? Mind you he was proud to, he went around showing these pictures and autographs to all his friends.
Like many of us, life is a fast lane, we’re not listening to our albums as much and it seems, years pass away like yesterdays. Then one day, the same thing happened to me, as I’m sure it happened to many of you Heepsters, you get hooked up on the Net and surf and surf and incredibly there’s Uriah Heep sites on the Net. I’ve been reading everything on Uriah Heep on the Net and I couldn’t believe how strong they are still rocking today. I’m proud of them, may they rock forever.
I still listen to my Uriah Heep albums now and then, more than in the past years, many songs though, bring me back to the past.
"As for Gary Thain and David Byron, they may be gone... but they left something special behind, that can only be felt by an old Heepster".
